How European Travel is Changing Next Year

If there’s one question travel advisors have been getting more of lately – it’s concerns about the new Visa rules for Europe. Visa-free travel to Europe is ending in January 2024 for Americans and Canadians. (We’re not the only ones, New Zealanders and Australians are affected too.)

The new fee isn’t much – about 7 euros (around $8) and the forms are easily filled out online. Most travelers should get approval quickly, but it could take up to four days or longer. All ages must apply for the visa and once approved the visa is good for multiple entries for up to three years. The new process and fees are an attempt to tighten border security and keep a digital eye on travelers’ comings and goings.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Savvy Travelers Head to Slovenia

If you’re looking for a destination that’s not overwhelmed with tourists, where you can spend your euros and the locals speak enough English for you to get by, then you need to know about Slovenia. 

This central European country is on the cusp of becoming part of the grand tour. Sharing borders (but not the same level of recognition) with Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Italy, Slovenia manages to combine the best of those better-known nations while offering a rich culture all its own.

The scenery is stunning: hike on spectacular, all-abilities trails in the Julian Alps, which rise over 8,000 feet, then head to Lake Bled in the foothills and learn all about its fairytale creation story. Explore the karst landscape between the Alps and the Adriatic sea, easily reached some 30 miles outside the capital of Ljubljana. The rock formations are both eerie and fascinating, but it’s the jaw-dropping subterranean world of Postojna Cave Park that will blow your mind with its strange limestone shapes and even stranger cave creatures. Take in a little history above with a wander around Predjama Castle, an impregnable medieval marvel that’s been carved out of the rock face.

The country’s farm-to-fork cuisine is also getting noticed – and has been called out in Forbes as Europe’s most underrated foodie find. Not to be missed: Hiša Franko in Kobarid, about two hours from the capital. This big house in the country is where self-taught and much-hailed chef Ana Roš creates tasting menus with the area’s famous ingredients: trout, deer and goat, not to mention its fruits and wild plants. Roš also ages her own Tolminc cheese and runs a wine bar during the summer months. 

And don’t leave the country without sampling its everyday food pleasures, including Štruklji, sweet or savory rolled dumplings, and potica, a traditional rolled nut cake made according to ancient recipes throughout the country.

Dublin, Ireland, for a long weekend getaway? Thanks to Preclearance, a handy U.S. Customs and Border Protection program, it's not as outlandish as it sounds. Sixteen airports in six countries allow travelers entering the USA the chance to clear Customs before landing in the States.

When a flight is “precleared,” its passengers can disembark as domestic fliers. Pack a carry-on and you can scoot right past the baggage carousel and be out of the airport and on your way home while travelers arriving from non-precleared airports are still in line at Customs. If you’re even farther afield, flying out of Abu Dhabi (which offers preclearance) smooths out that long trip home.

After two and a half years, Japan is at last open for visitors. Japan is a country that’s easy to fall in love with. Harmony, or “wa,” is a foundation of Japanese culture, and visitors will discover that this is a place where massive metropolises can co-exist with natural paradises, where skyscrapers tower not very far from historical temples and shrines. It is this blend of the modern and ancient that captures travelers like no other destination.

Each of Japan’s 47 prefectures has its own charm, and every season has wonders to share – from the cherry blossoms of spring in Yoshino, east of Osaka, to the surprisingly vibrant fall colors of the mainland, to the famous powder slopes craved by skiers on the island of Hokkaido. If you’re looking to the Caribbean to take the chill out of your bones this winter, go exploring beyond the usual haunts of the jet set – you’re guaranteed a much richer experience. The thrill of discovering a new favorite island is half the fun. So if you’re ready to branch out, here are a few islands to kick-start your imagination.

Grenada

Breathe in the sweet and spicy air from all the nutmeg and cocoa farms on this gorgeous West Indies island where English and Grenadian Creole are spoken. Visitors can wander over 40 white beaches, including the famous two miles of creamy sands along Grand Anse, or sample the wares at three rum distilleries and discover how cocoa beans are processed at “chocolate farms” while nibbling on artisanal treats. Curaçao

In Curaçao’s capital of Willemstad, recognized as a historical area by UNESCO, you can admire the Dutch colonial architecture. While beach delights are easy to find in Curaçao, adventurous types can hike up for grand views atop Christoffelberg, also known as Mount Saint Christoffel.

Dominica

Here’s another Caribbean gem, just a little off the beachy beaten path. Dominica is a lush tropical island found between Martinique and Guadeloupe. The island’s vibrant coral reefs just offshore are a diver’s paradise where volcanic subsea terrain and hot springs create a welcoming environment for many fascinating marine life. Snorkeling at Champagne reef – among all those little bubbles escaping the volcanic rock – might just tickle your fancy, too. Several top-end luxury resorts have opened in the last few years, making this small island packed with natural beauty an even more enticing destination.

Eleuthera

Pink Sands Resort, Dunmore Town, Eleuthera

This outer island in the Bahamian archipelago moves at a deliciously slow pace. Its name comes from the Greek word for “freedom,” which is apt because Eleuthera – while lined with gorgeous pink sandy beaches – is free from crowds or cruise ships or casinos. This thin island – no more than two miles wide – gives visitors views of both the roiling Atlantic Ocean and the calmer Caribbean Sea. Visitors who drive along the Glass Window Bridge – a causeway that connects the north and south and dubbed the narrowest point on Earth – can see both at once from their car. Vietnam – This country hugs the eastern edge of the Indochina peninsula and is famous for its beaches and beach resorts. In the capital, Hanoi, explore the labyrinth of streets in the old quarter and stop at a food stall to taste the cuisine—a yummy blend of Chinese and Thai flavors. And don’t leave before wandering the UNESCO world heritage site, Hoi An, an ancient trading village on the coast with well-preserved architecture and charm.

Why Portugal is one of our Favorite Countries

Portugal is having a moment. If you haven’t already heard a friend or colleague rave about this coastal European country that shares a border with Spain, you soon will.

The food, people, weather, vineyards, and football all make Portugal a fantastic and surprisingly affordable getaway. The country is small – even a five-day trip will give you time to see the highlights, or tack on a few extra days at the end of one of the popular Douro River cruises for city stops in gorgeous Porto in the north or chic Lisbon in the south.

Visitors will be delighted by the quality of the cuisine. Cooks all over the country create simple, succulent meals that make great use of the season’s best offerings or the day’s catch. You already know about the pastel de nata custard tart, but make sure you head to a churrascaria for the country’s sublime take on barbecued chicken. Another favorite: the bifana, traditional sandwiches of pork that has been marinated in white wine, garlic and paprika. Load on the piri-piri (hot sauce).

The tiered vineyards along the Douro River, growing almost vertically up the sides of the valley, have to be seen to be properly appreciated. Book a 4x4 tasting tour.

There is a good amount of sun and warmth around 300 days a year. And the cities make great spots for winter visits, with temperatures which rarely fall below 50˚F/10˚C. If you’re in Portugal for its many beaches, summer is your best bet. You’ll be sharing with the locals, but there are 600 miles of coastline, much of it sandy.

Portuguese are welcoming. Many comment on the warmth and generosity encountered in the country. Visitors must spend at least one evening listening to fado singers in a bar – the mournful, evocative music will captivate you, especially after a few well-priced glasses of Madeira or vinho verde.

When in Lisbon, drop by what’s known as the oldest and most beautiful bookstore in the world, Livraria Bertrand, which was founded in 1732. Its breathtaking interior is such a hit on social media that the store charges five euros to enter – and it’s worth it! Sports fans should take in a futebol match, too. The Swahili word safari means “journey,” and perhaps there is no greater journey than an overland exploration in the incredible continent of Africa. It’s a chance to detach from the world for a while as you submerse yourself in the savannah and surrender to the rhythms of nature.

Which Country is the Best Place to Visit?

Africa is home to 54 countries, with only a handful offering different types of safari experiences. The best time to view wildlife is during the dry season — roughly June to October in sub-Saharan Africa. If it’s the Great Migration you want to see (herds of wildlife crossing the rivers of the Serengeti and Masai Mara), go between July and September. Let’s look at what a few of these countries have to offer:

Botswana:  Home to classic safari lodges and the opportunity to explore via water-based safaris, Botswana is home to the famous flood plains of the Okavango Delta — the biggest inland delta in the world. Jeep drive or dugout canoe? The choice is yours.

Tanzania: Perhaps best known for the Great Wildebeest Migration, which happens in May and again in December. It’s also famous for the open savannahs of the Serengeti. Travellers have a good chance of spotting all of the “Big Five” species (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo), especially if the safari day includes time around the Ngorongoro Crater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To unwind from your big adventure, Zanzibar's picture-perfect beaches are a great place to relax before the long flight home.

Kenya:  One of the best-known countries for safaris, travellers have been coming to this East African country and the wilds of the Masai Mara National Park for years. Here’s your chance to live out your Out of Africa fantasy (the 1985 classic was filmed here) while watching the Great Migration, too.

Zambia and Zimbabwe: Part of the draw towards these countries is the chance to see Victoria Falls — the world's most spectacular sheet of falling water. The rainbows and mist and overwhelming water spray (for those who get close enough) are as unforgettable as the safari.

South Africa: This is often the most popular destination for first-timers since travellers have a strong chance of seeing the Big Five. Look for leopards at Sabi Sands and enjoy this country’s luxury safari camp scene. South Africa also has more to offer than wildlife: it’s compact enough for post-safari visits to excellent wine country and gorgeous coastal beaches.

Uganda and Rwanda: Either of these central African countries is your go-to place for spotting mountain gorillas in the wild. Intrepid travellers will rise early and trek for hours through dense jungle and rainforest to watch in wonder at these humanlike beasts.

When Should we Take the Kids?

Heading into Africa is a mind-blowing experience for every age group, but when you’re traveling with children, parents often wonder, “What age is the right age to go on safari?” Here’s our advice: 

Under 9: Even if you’ve got a good little traveller at home, the long flights and long days chasing animals in wild jeep rides through safari country may be a little much for this age group. Certainly, families will need to move at a slower pace to help break up the trip for wee ones. 

Ages 10-tween: Ten-year-olds are very impressionable. Their brains are growing quickly, their attention span is increasing, and they can handle more independent thought – events and skills learned at this age have a habit of staying with children for years. If your 10- to 12-year-old is mature enough to handle long-haul travel, a safari is a great eye-opener. Not only will The Lion King come to life before their eyes, but also it’s a fantastic introduction to new cultures, new environments, and different ways of life.

Ages 13-18: Perhaps the perfect time for rough-and-ready safari trips is when you’ve got teenagers to enthrall. Not only are they now big enough that you can trust they won’t fall out of open-top jeeps but also they will be spellbound by the visceral reality of a safari. It may also be the only time you see them up before dawn for early-morning game drives. Make sure your safari includes cultural visits to nearby villages. There’s an opportunity for intellectual growth for your teen every day on safari.

How Far Will Your Sweet Tooth Take You?

Discovering new cuisines in new countries is one of the pleasures of travel. Biting into a freshly made macaron on the Champs-Élysées makes it so much more delicious. For your final course, pass on the cheese plate and sink your teeth into these classic treats in their country of origin.

France: Chocolate mousse, made the French way (with eggs, no cream), is denser and richer and truly out of this world. C’est magnifique!

New Orleans: Beignet, a deep-fried square doughnut piled high with icing sugar, is best served with strong coffee and eaten in an outdoor café in the French Quarter. Extra napkins, please.

Mexico: Pastel de Tres Leches, or three milk cake, is a dense sponge cake steeped in evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. It’s decadent, yet light and airy, too.

Portugal: Pastel de nata– the sweet creamy custard nestled in a tart of scorched puff pastry and dusted with cinnamon is one of Portugal’s great gifts to the world.

Jamaica: Rum cake –  more than one bottle of booze is used to bake this dark, luscious fruitcake. Then once it’s out of the oven, more rum is poured on top for good measure. 

Zeppole | Eton Mess | Tart au sucre

Southern Italy: Zeppole –  the deep-fried, bite-sized doughnuts can be savory or sweet. Dough that’s twisted into small shapes is best eaten hot, but also try zeppole filled with pastry cream and chocolate.

England: Eton Mess – dip your silver spoon into a gorgeous mix of crisp meringue, fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Enjoy with a strong cuppa.

Quebec: Tarte au sucre, or sugar pie, is a French-Canadian classic. A thickened maple syrup filling on a flaky pie crust is a sweet way to welcome spring.

To Catch a Thief (1955) Oh, la, la! Once you take your eyes of Grace Kelly’s stunning wardrobe, the ocean views, rocky cliffs, and corniche roads of the French Riviera will remind you why it’s time to book your flight. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a Cary Grant lookalike amongst the jet set in Monaco or strolling the flower market in Nice. 

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) Watch Diane Lane play a divorcee who recovers from heartbreak in Italy by impulsively buying a fixer-upper in Tuscany. A rom-com that makes you remember why la dolce vita is what makes this country so special.

The Bucket List (2007) A feel-good film where Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman play unlikely travel buddies on a deadline to see as much of the world as they can -- everywhere from the Taj Mahal to Africa to Egypt, with a whole lot of globetrotting in between. 

The Jungle Cruise (2021) Sure the plot is based on a Disney theme-park ride, but this rollicking adventure makes us long for the thrill of discovery. As Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s characters sail up the Amazon river, we can’t stop thinking about the wonder and wildlife of Galapagos.
